Artist Statement

This sculpture explores organic shapes formed from following the specific steps of a making process. The elements of each piece are wheel thrown using parian porcelain clay. The clay is purposely placed under duress to reveal the tension and movement in its surface and form.

The process for creating this piece involves a continuous making cycle of repetition, compression and cut. The clay is pushed, pulled, compressed and sliced to record tension and movement. The final forms are the result of combining elements from these making scenarios, referencing figurative objects that hold different characteristics – both organic and controlled.

Artist Profile

Born: 1976

Hometown: Surbiton

Based in: London

Steven Edwards is a Ceramic Artist based in London. Having spent over 16 years as a Graphic Designer in leading London design agencies, he completed a postgraduate (MA) of ceramics from the University for the Creative Arts in 2018. He has exhibited his work at various UK shows including the British Ceramics Biennial, London Craft Week and London Design Festival.

His work investigates the language of making through the materiality of clay. Fascinated by process-led making, he uses simple tools and traditional techniques to explore unanticipated outcomes and revealing properties when clay is placed under tension. By applying specific steps to a making process and manipulating the clay’s limits, he attempts to create objects that reference a balance between handmade and mechanised mark making.

His aim is to share the material/maker relationship with the viewer by creating artworks that display a common theme of construction, drawing attention to the implied movement recorded by the clay through handling it over a period of time.
