Sufana Nijam (b. 1990, Saudi Arabia) is a self-taught artist based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. While pursuing her education in Biomedical Sciences from Northumbria University, UK, 2014, she also explored many forms of artistry during her free time. After returning to Sri Lanka, she explored her options in her field of study, however it wasn’t long before she realized her true calling in artistic creation. She is known by the local art community as a diverse artist, with her work ranging mostly from acrylic, abstract and otherwise, to charcoal, to crafts, including but not limited to candle-making, cement house wear design, tie-dye techniques, murals, ink prints, clay sculpting, henna art, personalized T-shirt painting, dream catchers, wire art and jewellery making.
She is a member of the art forum Open Brain Colombo based locally and is just starting to concentrate on her career in art. Her love for art blossomed from textures, color palettes and techniques that she was exposed to from a young age, and she was also inspired by renowned artists around the world, most notably Kandinksy, Banksy, Vincent Van Gogh, and not forgetting a few modern names like Jessica Swan, Vicky Remiss, Sarah Caudle and Brittany Lee Howard. She continues to discover and master newer techniques, always making sure she is fluent with one before she moves onto the other medium/style. She does not have a signature style as yet, however she has a special love for trees and thus includes tree elements in lots of her work, and she also incorporates a cosmic-themed style in her personal pieces as she considers nature and the universe to be her most prominent inspirations.
