This wall sculpture is wheel thrown, then altered by cutting and folding when the clay is still soft. The exterior surface is layered with multiple underglazes, then carefully sanded to reveal the strata of color underneath.

Artist Profile

Hometown: Montana

Based in: Bloomington indiana

I work out of my studio just northeast of Bloomington Indiana. I use locally dug
clay from Clay City Indiana and fire my work to cone 6 in an electric kiln. I use the
wheel to throw basic functional shapes, then cut, alter and reassemble the pieces
into more complex, original forms which put their functionality into question .
I use a variety of surface decoration techniques such as water abrasion (removing
masked patterns with a wet sponge) and kinsugi (gold joinery). I often layer
underglazes one on top of the other, and then sand the surface to reveal strata of
color. This creates a compelling bright matte surface which is often contrasted
with a glossy interior or section.
My forms often reflect geometric patterns found in nature, and my surfaces
are inspired by the patterning found in textiles. My work reflects the influence
Japanese ceramics and aesthetics has had on my work, especially the concept of
Wabi-sabi, which is the acceptance of imperfection as an aesthetic value. In my
work is the serendipitous discovery through unintended consequences which
then can become part of my personal artistic vocabulary.

Education
I completed my BFA in Ceramics from Northern Arizona University then continued on to a Master’s
degree from the University of Arizona. After a hiatus I continued my ceramic studies at Indiana university.
