Artist Statement

Tibor Simon-Mazula's new exhibition "Closeness" reacts to the strong impact of lockdowns and the rapidly evolving technology on the multilayered nature of perceiving reality. Artworks depict human emotions, everyday situations, and many different inner snippets of time, while the artist excitedly looks to reveal human relationships and motivations beyond what lies visible on the surface. As a continuation of his earlier series, Simon-Mazula in his new paintings still focuses on human actions and notions such as engagement, awakening and remembering.
The artist's wife Diana, as the embodiment of beauty, is the central character on the artworks. She is the muse, through whom, Mazula depicts the most complex moments of existence, and portrays everyday actions in physical spaces. Simon-Mazula's deep and intimate experiences are linked to human beings, existing private or living spaces, and captured delicate gestures; he interested in personality, reality of the present, and the honesty of a moment and demonstrates that people’s intimate experiences are common yet mysterious, even though they may seem to be trivial.
Grey and blue colors of his palette are just like as unique as the unconventional use of the traditional materials such as bone ash, pumice, marble dust and alum.
Simon-Mazula's engrossing visual dialogue is influenced by the seven years he spent in the United States. It is exciting in attitude and visual approach, his Central Eastern European roots in conversation with the influence of the ‘Bay Area Figurative Movement’ of Northern California.
