At high tide these tori gates at Oouo Shrine appear to float in the waters of the Ariake Sea. According to legend, some three centuries ago, a magistrate was rescued by a giant fish from a neighbouring island and, in gratitude, built this shrine. The name Oouo literally means “large fish shrine”.
