Artist Statement

“The Rome of my memories is not the usual yellow ochre type, but a luminous blue, bathing in the gentle light. This is how I saw it, this is how I remember it.” —Valeria Privalikhina

Valeria effortlessly captures the unmistakable silhouette of St. Peter’s Basilica dissolving into the sky and animated by soft highlights, echoing the iridescent reflections on the water. Painted during the 2020 lockdown from memory, Valeria’s depiction of Rome is so acutely atmospheric and fresh that it is hard to believe it was painted a few months after the encounter. Perhaps it is the spell of the Eternal City.

Despite following Monet’s footsteps in her choice of subject matter, Valeria managed to speak with her own voice through the choice of a narrow vertical format, colour palette and delicate edgework typical of her style.
