Artist Statement

"Looking through my artworks one by one, you can see that the topic of water has been with me for quite a long time. David Hockneys’ artworks pushed me to the plot of diving and resurfacing. This series of works was created in summer, after a trip to the sunny Azerbaijan with its sea, swimming pools, etc. Upon my return to St.Petersburg, the printing workshop at the Art Academy was at my disposal all summer. Seizing the moment, I created these and many more linocuts that summer.
I experimented a little: In this part the triptych, I used a lot of paints: first, I established the medium-tone flat masses with the rollers, and drew on top with my fingers and oil paints to emphasize anatomical details . Those parts of the linocut where I applied oil paints contain most texture. I tried to achieve the flesh-like appearance of the face and the skin."—Varvara Drobina

Varvara Drobina is a professional artist born and based in St.Petersburg, Russia. She is currently in her final year at the prestigeous Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in St.Petersburg, Russia, where she specializes on the printmaking techniques, illustration and book design.

Filled with countless allusions from various art forms, from cinema to theatre, from poetry to music, Varvara Drobina's artworks are strikingly powerful and have a lasting aftertaste.
