Artist Statement

"I am fascinated with the process of arranging abstract shapes on the surface, in which everyone, even without a plot, will ultimately find something deeply personal and touching."—Varvara Drobina

Filled with countless allusions from various art forms, from cinema to theatre, from poetry to music, Varvara Drobina's artworks are strikingly powerful and have a lasting aftertaste. Decorative without becoming superficial, illustrative without becoming restrictive, they speak at both figurative and abstract levels.

Linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper. The actual printing is done by hand using a printing press. As such no two prints are exactly the same.

This original artwork comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.
