Artist Statement
Metamorphopsia is a specific disorder of visual perception. This is due to the central nervous system, which is involved in the transmission, modality and analysis of visual stimuli. The objects seen are perceived as changed, but in such a way that the object is still recognizable, although it seems to have properties different from the real ones. Metamorphopsia means that perceived objects may be in a different place than they really are. The world can be brighter, more expressive - an abstract painting with unique features is created. Deformations can change the size of viewed objects, distances and proportions. Multiplications of elements may appear. It is also characteristic to shimmer or glow of the visual image, color changes of objects or monochrome vision. Visual metamorphopsia also includes disturbances in the emotional perception of perceived objects.
Vidal Toreyo was inspired not only by the optical, but also the emotional side of this phenomenon. He used it to create a series of abstract paintings. Vidal Toreyo's paintings go beyond simple deformation. They are a puzzle in which you have to find and imagine the topic. Therefore, the names of this series do not suggest what was the inspiration. The viewer has complete freedom to interpret the painter's ideas. It is a game. He plays with himself. The viewed image is real, its associations are caused by presumptions and conjectures. The viewer's brain looks for associations, assesses the drawing, colors and tones. An abstract painting in your mind changes and adjusts to the image, association and memories. And each viewer deforms what he sees in front of him into his own image, creates his own metamorphopsia in his mind.

Artist Profile
Born: 1963
Hometown: Jerez de la Frontera
Based in: Jerez de la Frontera
Vidal Toreyo comes from a sheep ranching family. The surroundings of the childhood region, the rough, coarse nature he grew up with, were the main reason he wanted, to the disbelief and disappointment of his father, to study painting. He studied art and now lives most of the year in Madrid.
During the few years of his artistic search Vidal’s works evolved in a continuous process from expressive representations strongly dependent on primitive art to new aesthetics of creating images. Vidal Toreyo finally did and got right away embraced, as he puts it, by abstract expressionism. Free, unrestrained expression, art not subjected to any particular compositional rigor reflects the freedom of mountain planes. Vidal creates colorful patches, lines and patterns, lets the drama dominate his work by using color as a strong element. He describes his paintings as: Sensual Ethereal Metaphysical Amorphous Fleeting Personal Variables. His is a sense of depth achieved through a variety of textures yielding an almost sculptural form. At the moment, he concentrates on alternating and mixes traditional and modern techniques by combining action images with a bold calligraphic style. His graphics are highly physical, joyful and interpretive. Large format goes hand in hand with easels and acrylic paints. His acrylic paintings are made of many interacting layers resulting in a surprising artifact.
