Artist Statement
As part of his unwavering endeavour to conjure characters that can embody the liminal state of humanity, Haiyang conceived Skins, a collection of six pastel works paired with animation. The paintings, depicting hair-covered ancestral men and women, live in a surreal pictorial space that subverts the passage of time.
This unlikely cast of characters is transplanted from the prehistoric era into the contemporary stage as actors and re-enactors of modern human mannerisms while also ironically being commentary, and unawarely so, of the absurdity of contemporary times.
In Skins, Haiyang masterfully plays on the viewers’ natural instinct to feel both extraneous and yet connected to the narrative, bound to recognise part of their human experience reflected in the eye of these biomorphic creatures.
