Artist Statement

IconCaretDown

Mak employs untraditional approaches to the practice of Chinese ink by giving a new contemporary angle to the framework of traditional ink; the lines and rich shades of colours in her ink art as we see in both ‘Afternoon Stroll’ and ‘Spring Break’, leading us into a peaceful and pleasant place.

Artist Profile

Born: 1957

Hometown: Hong Kong

Based in: Hong Kong

Winnie Mak was born and lives in Hong Kong, currently standing as the President of the Hong Kong Union of Visual Artists. She moved to Canada in the 1970s where she studied western art and ink painting through the workshops offered by Lee Byng, a renowned watercolorist, and Lam Chin-shek, a noted painter, calligrapher, and seal-carver. Her serigraphy has been represented in international art fairs, competitions, and invitational exhibitions, and she was recognized with a Special Jury Award at the International Mini Prints 2020 organized by the International Printmaking Center, the National Taiwan Normal University.
Apart from developing her own artwork, she administered an array of art projects and visual arts exhibitions, in her capacity as curator and organizer for the Hong Kong Committee of the Federation of Asian Artists, under the aegis of the Home Affairs Bureau of HKSAR, and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, with rewarding results. Her artworks have been included in the permanent collection of the University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong (2007); the International Printmaking Center of the National Taiwan Normal University (2017); The Diaghilev Museum of Modern Art of the St. Petersburg State University (2018) and corporate and private collectors. This is the first time Alisan Fine Arts is working with her.
