'Yunlang Quarry Ecology Recovery Project, Dali, Yunnan, China, 2017' is from Yan Wang Preston's critically acclaimed project 'Forest', for which she investigated the politics of nature reconstruction in new Chinese cities. Between 2010 and 2017 she photographed the development of transplanted old trees and their new urban homes in Chongqing, which aspired to be a 'forest city'. She also photographed the fantastic, yet alarming ecology recovery landscapes in the 'ecology model town' of Haidong in Dali, Yunnan Province. This particular photograph depicts the landscape of ecology recovery project at a disused quarry in Haidong. Here a semi-artificial type of red soil is used in vast quantity to form the base for introduced plants, from turf grass to transplanted old trees. 'Forest' project won the 1st Prize, Syngenta Photography Award in 2017 and the 1st Prize, Professional Landscape category, Sony World Photography Awards in 2019. The book was published by Hatje Cantz in 2018 (ISBN: 978-3-7757-4375-7).
