Artist Statement

IconCaretDown

Yarno paints the landscapes of Indonesia, with its large tracts of agricultural land and farming culture as well as a proliferation of animals. Rendered in a unique style where the composition is filled in each area and multiple focal points can be identified by a discerning viewer, the effect is a richly-layered hive of activity, movement and colour. The theme of his works is largely ecological and concerns sustainability - as he observed, over the years, the desire of mankind for progress leading to the inevitable destruction of green spaces and forests for the building of infrastructure and modernisation. He paints in the landscapes that are gradually becoming lost, along with species of animals and ways of living that will slowly become foreign to future generations. In this fantasy realm, there is abundance instead of loss - and the idyllic sense of being in and one with nature pervades his works.
