Artist Statement

IconCaretDown

" 'Diamond and Rust' is a series of works that record some strong moments stored in one’s memory in the course of life. Diamonds represent firmness and eternity, while rust refers to qualitative change and the mark of time.

The creation of this series of works was random and free. I choose regular or irregular pictorial elements to interweave together and meet in random logic. Everything in this process is free. With layers of color overlapping, the superposition of each level is a process of recording. With the accumulation of time, the picture builds up slowly until it finally achieves a balance between the abstract and figurative symbols of the overall composition."

Artist Profile

Born: 1972

Hometown: Guangxi Province

Based in: Beijing

Ye Hongxing (叶红杏) is a Beijing-based artist, born in 1972 in Guangxi Province, China. One of the most relevant and successful stars of the contemporary Chinese art scene, Ye Hongxing was previously selected as one of the top 20 contemporary Chinese artists by the curator of California’s Asia Art Museum and the director of Art Cologne. Working in oil paint, mixed media, sculpture, and installation, Ye’s works have been well-received internationally, especially her montaged sticker works that explode with animals, flora, and figures, or shape meditative Buddhist mandalas. Her works relish a sense of vivid, exquisite chaos, expressing a richness and luxury that combines bright hues with pop culture symbols and traditional motifs. Visually sublime scenes layer oppositions of tranquility and intricate frenzy, incorporating both realism and the visionary.

Ye Hongxing’s unique aesthetic has earned her popular acclaim worldwide. She has collaborated with designer Christian Louboutin and is widely collected by high-profile figures within China. Ye Hongxing has exhibited at galleries and museums throughout China, Europe, and the United States, and has been shown internationally at fairs including Paris Art Fair, London Art Fair, Art Central (Hong Kong), Art Stage Singapore, India Art Fair (New Delhi), Art Basel (Miami), SH Contemporary Art Fair (Shanghai), Art Beijing Contemporary Art Fair (Beijing), Art Taipei, Art Cologne, Scope (Basel, New York), PULSE (New York), Art Asia (Miami), where her installation was labeled one of the fair’s highlights.
Recently, she has been featured as one of the influential female artists in the Beijing fashion magazine SKP in the issue “Woman of the Future”.
