Ksana is a Buddhist term that signifies the shortest unit of time - an instant. Should we qualify ksana with the measurement system we are used to, it is equivalent to one seventy-fifth of a second. In Buddhist sutras, it is explained that ‘900 arisings and 900 ceasings’ are happening within each ksana, in other words, a fair amount of action goes on in a split second. What Eastern philosophies refer to as arisings and ceasings, Western science defines as a perpetual state of change of the matter - a jiggly dance of tiny electric planetary system that modern scientists also call atoms. With thousands of such little sticker-atoms Ye Hongxing constructs a portrait of what an instant could look like. A matter zoomed under a microscope. Something not-quite-flower, not-quite-bird, floating mid-air, as though mid-way through a physical transformation. The elements merge into one another, with certain parts reappearing just to morph back into the canvas itself. The moment of constant becoming captured and framed with Ye Hongxing’s artistic vision.
Ksana’s imagery vibrates with motion.

Ye Hongxing (叶红杏) is a Beijing-based artist, born in 1972 in Guangxi Province, China. One of the most relevant and successful stars of the contemporary Chinese art scene, Ye Hongxing was previously selected as one of the top 20 contemporary Chinese artists by the curator of California’s Asia Art Museum and the director of Art Cologne. Working in oil paint, mixed media, sculpture, and installation, Ye’s works have been well-received internationally, especially her montaged sticker works that explode with animals, flora, and figures, or shape meditative Buddhist mandalas. Her works relish a sense of vivid, exquisite chaos, expressing a richness and luxury that combines bright hues with pop culture symbols and traditional motifs. Visually sublime scenes layer oppositions of tranquility and intricate frenzy, incorporating both realism and the visionary.
Ye Hongxing’s unique aesthetic has earned her popular acclaim worldwide. She has collaborated with designer Christian Louboutin and is widely collected by high-profile figures within China. Ye Hongxing has exhibited at galleries and museums throughout China, Europe, and the United States, and has been shown internationally at fairs including Art Cologne, Scope (Basel, New York), PULSE (New York), Art Asia (Miami), Art Stage Singapore, and the India Art Fair (New Delhi), where her installation was labeled one of the fair’s highlights. Notable recent exhibitions include 2014 solos The Fantasy Factory at Art+ Shanghai Gallery (Shanghai) and Ye Hongxing Solo Exhibition at the Lux Art Institute (San Diego, California), where Ye Hongxing completed a month-long artist residency.
