Artist Statement
Goldfish and Girl
I love goldfish. They are elegant funny and also said to symbolise good luck and fortune.
At first I painted a girl on her own in a dark blue side-street at dusk. It felt too lonely and something was missing, but then I had the idea to paint a goldfish, inspired by Henri Matisse’s 'Interior with a Goldfish Bowl'.
To emphasise the surprise encounter between fish and girl, I finished the background in an abstract way.
