Artist Statement
Inspired by Kafka’s short story of the same name, this painting is about a decision made on a whim. Some diurnal penguins break their routine and take a walk at night. Thrilled with the unexpected freedom and the seemingly familiar world under night’s cover, they explore everything on the long way up to the boulders. The moon is already quite high when they, curious and exuberant and black as a silhouette, come into their true nature.
Painted between 2017 and 2020, the finished work is protected with two coats of professional grade UV varnish.

Artist Profile
Born: 1985
Hometown: Shanghai
Based in: Luxembourg
Yuan is a Canadian artist and designer born in Shanghai, China.
She is interested in experimenting and making pictures with combined techniques.
Growing up in big cities, she developed a fascination for nocturnal scenes and brutalist architecture, which, together with her innate fondness of nature and animals, builds up an interesting contrast that can be frequently observed in her work. Influenced by the ancient Chinese philosophy, she constantly explores the Taoism concept of ‘relative opposites’, creating poetic and imaginary worlds that embrace a moment of tranquillity and chaos, mingle luminosity with darkness, imply subtle movement from stillness.
She takes the process of creating a way to discover the invisible rhythm of this world and her relationship with it. Through her work, she would like to share her proper way of seeing and her meditation on ‘what is reality’.
