Lives and Works: Singapore
Born in 1989, Singapore, Zhang Fuming formally obtained a Diploma in Fine Arts (Printmaking) in LASALLE College of the Arts in 2011. In 2014, he is awarded the Young Talent Programme Solo Exhibition Prize and presented his debut solo exhibition in Ion Arts Gallery on September 2015. He have since concluded his second solo exhibition in December 2016 entitled "Poised for Success" at AC43 Gallery, Singapore.
Known for his bold, large format woodblock prints, Zhang is an active practicing member of the Singapore arts scene and have been included in numerous showcases locally, such as ‘Daydreams + Nightmares’ at the substation Gallery in 2014 as part of Singapore Night Festival and ‘Presence and Distances” at Flaneur Gallery in 2015. More recently, Zhang’s works have been selected to be exhibited in Xiamen, China, as part of ‘The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Art Week’.Generally revolving around isolated figurative representations, Zhang's works are commonly associated with subjects pertaining to social currents. He depicts his focus with the techniques of Printmaking as an extension of his draftsmanship.
In Late 2010, Zhang embarked on an ongoing series of work entitled "RICE BOWL". The term "Rice Bowl" is a common analogy in reference to the staple, a form of means, in which a man earns his living. Since, the representation of men within their genre of livelihood, and associated concerns have continued to serve as a reoccurring inspiration and central theme for his work.
His works often present itself in a social-commentary typed narrative, tapping into his roots as a Chinese Singaporean, which he regularly depicts motifs common in it's culture.
At this current junction of his practice, his medium of choice has largely been Woodcuts, in which he feels permits a direct, efficient form of visual communication with his audience with the finest economy of means.
