Alongside the participating galleries and dealers and other public programs available throughout the duration of the fair, Spotlight sits in the center of the limelight as it presents an exhibition of the final works printed and authenticated by the celebrated late Chinese photographer, Ren Hang.
A curated PHOTOFAIRS initiative, Spotlight aims to encapsulate the works and provocative artistic practice Ren Hang along with his contributions to contemporary photography.
Originally displayed at the KWM artcenter in Beijing, the 19 works from Hang’s “Beauty without Beards” series will be on show at PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai 2017 for the first time in an international forum in China since Hang’s passing in Feburary 2017 at the age of 29.
Ren Hang’s work is often associated within a sexual-political framework, however Spotlight hopes to demonstrate the artist’s natural attraction and affinity with photography, highlighting instead his interest for poetic abstraction of the human body.
Ren selects subjects from among those close to him and Beijing’s creative community rather than use professional models creating a more intimate and personal interaction between the photographer and subject. A self-taught photographer, Ren shot spontaneously, capturing lines, textures movement and emotion in a single frame. The celebrated photographer never saw his work as a means to "push boudaries" of what is accepted in society, but merely "does what he does".
By looking at the context in which Ren Hang creates his works, perhaps there is a new side to his creative processes yet to be explored. This exhibition is definitely not one to be missed and we'll let Ren's works speak for themselves.
