Bellas Artes Projects at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

Bellas Artes Projects at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar
Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar.

Earlier this month, The Artling team took a little trip to Bagac, Bataan in the Philippines on a quest to walk the grounds of Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, a heritage preservation project that involves the reconstruction, restoration and collection of historical Spanish-Filipino houses like the Rafael Enriquez y Villanueva mansion that was built in 1867. Formerly located in the Manila neighborhood of Quiapo, this historical building was donated by the artist Enriquez y Villanueva and subsequently transformed into la Escuela de Bellas Artes, the oldest art school in the Philippines.

Around 300 Filipino craftsmen worked over twelve years to bring the structure back to its former glory at its new home at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar and it could not be more apt that the Bellas Artes Projects is headquartered within its walls. Hosting artist residencies and providing a space of experimentation and support to contemporary artists, the Bellas Artes Projects creates an rich environment for artists to collaborate and gain inspiration from the abundant Filipino heritage, culture and traditional craftsmanship on site, revealing the Indian, Muslim, Spanish, Latin American, and American influences in addition to indigenous and South East Asian influences that are apparent in each aspect of the buildings’ architecture.

Scroll on for a quick virtual tour around Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar!
