From art fairs to biennales and triennials, here are the art events to watch out for in 2019:

 

Australia

9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art

The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art's flagship contemporary art series. Since 1993, the APT series has drawn more than three million visitors with its unique mix of presenting the most exciting and important contemporary art from the region and offering cross-cultural insight. The APT takes over QAGOMA every three years with the exhibition, film program, Children’s Art Centre projects, a dedicated public program of talks and workshops. Enabling the Gallery to develop expertise and partnerships in the region, the APT has fostered the development of the development of one of the world's most significant collections of contemporary Asian and Pacific art.

 

China

The 12th Shanghai Biennale

As the first international contemporary art biennial on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Biennale was launched in 1996. After 22 years of development, it has grown to become a significant platform for the exhibition of global contemporary art and for discourse. Since its launch, the biennale has maintained high levels of artistic and intellectual standards while consistently analyzing the evolution of urban culture in the international context. Transpiring every two years, the Shanghai Biennale features a gathering of the industry’s most innovative and thought-provoking curators and artists who explore the connection between urban life, contemporary art & the public. This year's theme is "Proregress ——Art in an Age of Historical Ambivalence".

Gallery Weekend Beijing

What: 
Gallery Weekend Beijing (GWBJ) is hosted in venues across 798 Art District, Caochangdi Art District, and Tianzhu Town in Shunyi District. This year, 26 participating galleries and non-profit institutions will take part, an almost 20% increase from the previous year, with new participants including Faurschou Foundation, Hunsand Space, Song Art Museum, Star Gallery and Tabula Rasa Gallery. The selection is made by the Academic Committee and GWBJ, following a thorough evaluation of a large number of participation applications.

 

Design China Beijing

What: 
Design China Beijing is a brand new trade design event, showcasing iconic international design brands as well as a strong roster of local design brands. West Bund Art & Design

With exhibitions and art events offered by museums and galleries in the city, West Bund has made November’s Shanghai a permanent fixture on the global art calendar.

ASIA NOW

Founded by Claude Fain and Alexandra Fain, ASIA NOW aims to present the new perspectives and issues for contemporary Asian art and its market: the value of its artists, its potential for development and its rising stars. As an ideal platform for dialogue and interaction dedicated to contemporary artistic creation, ASIA NOW addresses in greater depth the selected artistic scene through a curatorial platform and special projects. The first event organized was the exhibition The Writings of Today are a Promise for Tomorrow by Zheng Guogu and the Yangjiang Group and curated by Dr. Martina Koppel-Yang at Palazzo Morozini during the 56th Venice Biennale. Since 2016, ASIA NOW takes place every year in a Parisian mansion at 9 Avenue Hoche during Paris Art Week in October.

Art Central Hong Kong

Now in its fifth edition, Art Central is recognised as a place of discovery and a platform for museum quality artworks from more established names to be exhibited alongside cutting-edge works by emerging artists. Staged within an architect-designed temporary structure, the strong gallery line-up is complemented by a dynamic six-day programme that includes interactive installations, experimental film and performance, engaging panel discussions, as well as some of Hong Kong’s hottest eateries. The 2019 edition returns with over 100 contemporary galleries showcasing the next generation of talent alongside some of the most established galleries from across Asia and the globe.

Kochi-Muziris Biennale

Kochi-Muziris Biennale takes place in a range of venues centered around Fort Kochi-Mattancherry, with Durbar Hall in Ernakulam.

What: 
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale seeks to invoke the latent cosmopolitan spirit of the modern metropolis of Kochi and its mythical past, Muziris, and create a platform that will introduce contemporary international visual art theory and practice to India, showcase and debate new Indian and international aesthetics and art experiences and enable a dialogue among artists, curators, and the public.

Art Moments Jakarta will have its inaugural fair on 3 - 5 May 2019 at Sheraton Grand Hotel Ballroom at Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City Hotel, Gandaria City Mall Jakarta, South Jakarta, occupying a respectable area. Art Moments Jakarta is set up by a team of art professionals and experienced fair organizers in Jakarta and Singapore. Art Moments will not just host a spectacular art show but also an exceptional sculpture show. The sculptures will be located at Gandaria City Mall, amongst the international museum quality sculptures also being publicly displayed at the mall. It is a wonderful opportunity for galleries with a superb quality of sculpture to take part in this exhibition.

The Venice Biennale has been for over 120 years one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Established in 1895, the Biennale has an attendance today of over 500,000 visitors at the Art Exhibition. 2019 sees the 58th edition of this international art exhibition.
 

Japan

Setouchi Triennale

What: 
As in 2016, Setouchi Triennale 2019 will span 12 islands and 2 ports and be divided into three sessions. This time, each session will have its own seasonal theme: Spring Encounters, Summer Gatherings and Fall Expansions. Three areas of special focus will be pursued throughout the Triennale: discovering and sharing the gems of Setouchi, connecting people, islands and regions with each other and the world, and raising up human resources to provide the best island experience for visitors. Each area of focus will have its own project: the Monozukuri Project, the Asia Connections Project, and Fram’s Setouchi School. In addition, new artworks and facilities will be developed to reinforce connections with local communities and existing works will be used to further enhance the features of each site.

Aichi Triennale

Nakanojo Biennale

What:
Nakanojo Biennale started in 2007 and the 2019 art festival marks its 6th year. The entire rural town of Nakanojo will be transformed, where everything ranging from nearby onsen towns and abandoned wooden school buildings will host exhibitions of drawings, sculptures, photographs and installations from more than 130 artists. It will be held at Gunma Prefecture, Nakanojo town, with 5 areas including “Nakanojo/Isemachi” “Isama” “Shima” “Sawatari/Kuresaka” “Kuni”



DESIGNART Tokyo

Singapore Art Week

Singapore Art Week is an annual celebration of visual arts which takes place in the month of January to kick start the new year. Jointly organised by the National Arts Council, Singapore Tourism Board, and the Singapore Economic Development Board, Singapore Art Week reinforces Singapore's position as Asia's leading arts destination. The seventh edition in 2019 will be held from 19 to 27 January. The nine-day celebration of the visual arts will take place in venues across Singapore - from galleries and museums, to art precincts and independent art spaces. Reaching out to both Singapore residents and international visitors to promote art appreciation, Singapore Art Week offers a myriad of quality art experiences which span the visual arts, from traditional to modern to contemporary practices. Singapore Biennale

What: 
The Singapore Biennale is a massive contemporary art exhibition held at various venues all over Singapore. Established in 2006, the festival aims to cultivate public engagement with visual arts through a 4-month long exhibition and workshop program. Hosted in a range of venues including the Singapore Art Museum, the Asian Civilisations Museum, the National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Management University and The Peranakan Museum, visitors to Singapore will have no shortage of events so make sure to check out the full program when it is released. 

 

Art SG

Art SG is launched by Angus Montgomery Arts, Tim Etchells and Magnus Renfrew all of which have extensive experience of working across Asia Pacific. Tim Etchells and AngusMontgomery Arts have a long history of working in the region having established both with ART HK and Art Central in Hong Kong in addition to Sydney Contemporary and PHOTOFAIRS|Shanghai. Magnus Renfrew was founding Fair Director of both ART HK and Art Basel Hong Kong. Taipei Ceramics Biennale

What: 
First organized by Yingge Ceramics Museum in 2004, Taiwan Ceramics Biennale offers curatorial exhibition or artist competition in biannual years. The Biennale exhibition has encouraged the cooperation of international ceramic society as well as expand the depth and insight of ceramics art creativities in Taiwan. The theme for 2018 is “Humanistic Return: The Spiritual Origin of Ceramic Art” showcase from the original link between human and earth, and explore the possibilities between humanistic creation and time. The aim of this exhibition is to build a conversation between Asian ceramics art and culture from the perspective of Taiwan. The 2018 Taiwan Ceramics Biennale will exhibit approximately 70 to 80 artworks from more than 40 international ceramic artists. There will be senior curators, Taiwan ceramics researchers and ceramic artists to share their experiences in various workshops and lectures.

 

Thailand

Bangkok Art Biennale

Bangkok as a city of art and culture is full of rich tradition, creativity, and contemporary art. Renowned for heritage, hospitality, entertainment and gastronomy, Bangkok will serve as a grandiose venue for exciting international contemporary art. Bangkok Art Biennale will be the first Biennale in Bangkok and a new alluring destination for the international art scene. Artists, art enthusiasts, writers, and media converge in Bangkok for creative encounters.

 

Thailand Biennale

Various locations across Krabi 

What: 
As the foremost international exhibition of contemporary art in Thailand, the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC), Ministry of Culture in Bangkok, is organising the First Thailand Biennale. As a national initiative of contemporary art, the organising institution of this biennial is planned to choose different cities and sites in Thailand for each edition. Unlike conventional art museum exhibitions, Thailand’s first Biennale will be staged outdoor on natural sites in Krabi.

The most comprehensive international art exhibition organized both in Turkey and throughout the geographical sphere, the Istanbul Biennial plays an important role in the promotion of contemporary artists not only from Turkey but also from a number of different countries in the international arena. The Istanbul Biennial prefers an exhibition model that enables a dialogue between artists and the audience through the work of the artists instead of a national representation model. A complementary educational program is provided both for students and viewers of art, while simultaneously translated panel discussions, conferences, and workshops are also organized within the scope of the exhibitions.
