Artist of the Month: Oh Yam Chew

Our Artist of the Month for December is Singaporean artist currently based in the United States, Oh Yam Chew and his works that explore psychological and mental landscapes, as well as the built environment.

Trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Oh is currently pursuing his Masters in Fine Art at New York's School of Visual Arts. Oh's painted works have a very distinctive all-overness to it, a quality that links very much to the Abstract Expressionist movement that emerged in the 20th Century. However, instead of eschewing space, he embarces them, meditating on "physical and metaphysical spaces that he enters and exits due to relocations across three continents and major life changes."

In "Contiguity (Cacophony)", a myriad of colours and strokes layer over one and other in a frenzied dance. Each line looks like a road, a traceable path deep into his work; stepping back, the work looks like a map to a destination unknown, but an invitation to a variety of experiences and throughts. It is not at all a coincidence that works such as "Contiguity (Cacophony)" and "Contiguity (Major)" resemble maps: Oh is very much interested in "the roads, routes, paths, passages, bearings and trajectories ever-present in our lives" and explores this deeply through his work.

Contiguity (Major)

Colour is also a large part of Oh's works. Although many of his canvases can be largely quite muted in colour, when he does use it, there is a sense tha each dot, each line, each dash, has been clarefully considered. In "Nymphaea victus tempesta", we see the use of pink and green used in a very harmonious way despite the boldness of the pink.

Oh demonstrates a sensitivity to the materials, which translates to his work, capturing the fragility and strength of our human essence.
