Born in Singapore, Terence Tan has been a professional photographer since 2008. He currently lives and works in Singapore, capturing the public spaces around him.

Using the technique of photomontage with the medium of photography, Tan juxtaposes the new and the old - a characteristic that very much defines Singapore constant urban redevelopment. Historical shophouse buildings built in the 1930s are overlaid with skyscrapers that could have been constructed in the past few months, a sight that is not at all unfamiliar to those who have visited Singapore.

Tan captures the vibrance and energy of the city by artfully layer architectural lines upon each other. Is works defy the widely followed rules of perspective and framing, instead creating a surreal space in which viewers are encouraged to ‘read’ the city.

Furthermore, Tan’s works reflect the feeling of interconnectedness we feel as individuals passing through communal areas, as well as creating a link between our daily experience and the magic in our surroundings that we often overlook. Familiar becomes unfamiliar, and in doing so, we are forced to look at these areas with fresh eyes.

Tan’s photographic works are truly a homage to the beauty of this city and as such, a perfect way to celebrate 52 years of Singapore.
