The Artling and Straits Clan are pleased to present the launch of The Creative Studio, a four-month residency program at the member’s club in Bukit Pasoh. The inaugural residency program forms a part of the Straits Clan Arts Program, which aims to develop the club’s cultural capital and as a venue that enables and encourages lively dialogue between its members and the creative community.

The artists in the program are Aeropalmics (a.k.a Dawn Ang)Masuri MazlanTiffany Loy, and André Wee. These young creatives were nominated by a selection committee comprising Ben Jones of the Mandala Group, The Artling’s Talenia Phua Gajardo and Kim Tay, and Camilla Hewitson, consultant for the Straits Clan Arts Program. The selection committee considered each artist’s overall practice, the media with which they work, their need for studio space, as well as how the concepts in their works relate back to Straits Clan’s values.

The Creative Studio provides a unique and much-needed platform for local artists and designers to come together and hone their craft over the four-month period. The program gives these up-and-coming creatives the opportunity to create new works in a dynamic and collaborative environment, as well as exposure to a new audience of art lovers and potential collectors. The artists will create new works which will be exhibited at the club at the end of the residency period.

“We recognise how difficult it is for artists, especially during this pandemic, to have a nurturing and safe space where they can produce their best works. We at Straits Clan believe that unless we give artists support - be it financially, via access to new audiences, or time to create new work - we risk losing an entire generation of talent. Hence, we are pleased to partner with The Artling for the Creative Studio, which is just one of our initiatives in the Straits Clan Arts Programme to identify, support, and nurture exceptional artists with extraordinary ideas.”  - Ben Jones, CEO/Founder of Mandala Group, partner and co-manager of Straits Clan

Along with the Creative Studio, Straits Clan will introduce several activities, such as a ‘Collector’s Series’ of member activities such as artist dinners, gallery and art fair tours, talks and workshops, including a foundational course on art appreciation. There will also be a public art program where commissioned artworks will be displayed in the lobby of the Straits Clan as well other public areas within the club with the aim of making the Clan a “destination” for the arts in 2021 for both members of the club and the public.

“We have a long-standing relationship with Straits Clan, having played a main role in creating the club’s art collection from its inception. Being able to continue our partnership with Straits Clan via the launch of the Creative Studio is extremely exciting and we look forward to seeing what is produced during this residency period. Many creatives work from home, even prior to the pandemic, and we hope that giving these emerging creatives access to a different type of studio space within a new environment also leads to new dialogues.” - Talenia Phua Gajardo, CEO/Founder of The Artling
