The Artling is delighted to present a group design show, ‘CHINA DESIGN [WORKING TITLE],’ in their Shanghai private viewing space. Opening on 6 November 2019, the exhibition is timed to coincide with two major art fairs in Shanghai (Art021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair and West Bund Art & Design).
With the multitude of art events happening in the city during this period, The Artling hopes to present a different perspective to the creative scene and aims to highlight the breadth and depth of creative talents that exist in China, with a focus on collectible, limited edition chairs.
Yoko Choy, curator, November 2019
“While the world is searching for a definition of contemporary Chinese design, the reality is that there are likely to be several” shares curator Yoko Choy, “and they will be found in the hands of the young and aspirational generation currently establishing themselves across the vast nation. From the work of these selected designers, we can begin to understand the true essence of the culture and gain new perspectives for the global community. The modern Chinese collectible will include not only craftsmanship and innovation but also the intangible vision that will be of even bigger value in the years to come.”
CHINA DESIGN [WORKING TITLE] features salient designers (born between the 1980s and mid-1990s) from Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China: Benwu Studio (Shanghai), Chen Min (Hangzhou), Joyce Wang Studio (Hong Kong), Mario Tsai (Hangzhou), Michael Leung (Hong Kong), Naihan Li (Shanghai), Pili Wu (Taipei), Pinwu Studio (Hangzhou), Sheng Yin & Kai Yi (Beijing), Studio Buzao (Guangzhou) and Zhang Zhoujie (Shanghai). The exhibition has been curated by Yoko Choy Waiching (Hong Kong), creative consultant and the China editor of Wallpaper* global edition.
