The fifth edition of ​Dubai Design Week is taking place from 11-16 November 2019, at Dubai Design District (D3). The largest creative festival in the Middle East is celebrated with a varied program of over 200 events, highlighting the design identity of the UAE and the wider region.

With its hub in d3, Dubai Design Week has been a key player in cementing the city as a destination for design professionals and enthusiasts. The event serves as an accessible meeting point for the global design community, a platform for regional design and acts as a catalyst for the growth of the creative community in Dubai and the UAE.

Abwab pavilion 2019

Presenting a focus on regional designers in its ambitious and extensive program of events this year, Dubai Design Week 2019 will continue to encompass a range of disciplines including architecture, product design, interiors, and multimedia, with the majority of events being free to attend and accessible for both industry and public.

Key highlights of the event:

  • Downtown Design will present top international brands with strong presences in the Middle East, while the fair’s dedicated showcase for high-quality and original design; Downtown Editions, will present a focus on regional talent
  • Abwab will host designers from Lebanon, the Eastern Provinces of Saudi Arabia (supported by Ithra), and India
  • Guest Curator of Dubai Design Week, Designer Ghassan Salameh to spotlight regional design with “MADAR”, presented within Downtown Editions
  • Coinciding with Dubai Design Week, November 2019 brings the inaugural edition of the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, the first platform of its kind for architecture and urbanism in the region
  • Global Grad Show will bring together 150 of the best projects submitted by 100 of the world’s most innovative design and technology universities.
  • Talks with international architects Andrew Whalley, David Spierings and Simon Fraser about their work on Expo 2020 Dubai, and talks with industry leaders from Facebook and Ernst & Young and others about the future of design careers in the coming years
  • The Audi Innovation Award, a competition for design research aimed at highlighting innovative ideas from across the Middle East.  The first of its kind in the region, the award seeks to empower local designers and inspire innovation by challenging creatives to submit entries, this year responding to the theme ‘Simplification. The winning project will receive $25,000 worth of investment in their concept and prototypes of all the shortlisted designs are presented in the striking Audi Innovation Hub.
  • Nearly 200 exhibitions, installations, workshops, talks, tours, and events including a Designathon and live street jazz at the Akiba Garden. 
  • Installations and exhibitions including Umbra – inviting visitors to explore the interplay of shadow and light inspired by the Mashrabiya(an element of traditional Arabic architecture); ‘Barjeel’ - a six-metre tall installation inspired by the traditional wind towers of the UAE, composed from layers of reclaimed cardboard and strip lighting in an exercise to build from reused materials; ‘Kabul Old City - A Visual Journey’ is a multimedia experience by Turquoise Mountain, using virtual reality technology to digitise endangered cultural heritage sites in 3Dl; and various workshops on pottery, table lamps, Arabic typography, etc.

Held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, Dubai Design Week 2019 is staged in partnership with Dubai Design District (d3) and supported by Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (DCAA) and Audi Middle East. The 2018 edition attracted 75,000 visitors to d3 alone who attended the varied program of design-related events, exhibitions, performances, awards, talks, workshops, and experiences.
