Silverlens, will be presenting Hanna Pettyjohn's solo exhibition 'In Medias Res' from 5 - 23 December 2020 at their space in Makati City, Philippines. This will mark the Filipino artist's seventh solo show with Silverlens, and she will be presenting her newest works from her Anastomosis series, which heavily reference her past works filled with familiar memories and experiences. With 9 sculptures and 9 paintings, the exhibition takes visitors on a visual journey of Hanna's abstract landscapes, ultimately revealing a personal narrative that Hanna has reshaped with the passage of time.

In this exhibition, Hanna references the retelling of her own history, creative process, and the passage of time through her 'Anastomosis' paintings. She maps the journey of life like branches of memories and information by merging her creative process as a metaphor to reveal hidden truths. Hanna begins her process by selecting elements from Photoshop layers from what she calls the mother painting. These exposed past layers are then translated for each of her 'Anastomosis' paintings, which refer to the point of origin of a memory.

Hanna's delicate sculptural pieces were treated with fabric that was dipped in casting slip and fired in a kiln after. Both her process and the resulting imagery emphasises the concept of memory as all fabric material is burned, changing its materiality into ceramic sculptures. These sculptures are deliberately set atop of two large tables in front of the paintings to create the point of origin that connects her abstract landscapes.

This collection of works is used as a point of refence to her past works as well as the departure point for this new series. She combines abstracted landscapes with hints of the human presence with a muted colour palette, producing a feeling of sentimentality for a place that contains lived experiences. The landscape features various elements of nature and man-made objects, such as fabrics, tarps, and construction rubble.

Together, the application of digital processes to create the meticulously painted artworks in this exhibition invokes a metaphor for self-reflection. This exhibition thus becomes the process of deconstructing an image and reshaping it in different ways to depict the memory of Hanna's homeland in the Philippines and the passage of time. Her abstraction of the environment and the leftover rubble of objects left behind serves as a testament to our existence.
