The sculptural woodwork of Hiroyuki Nishimura...
Even though clay still remains to be one of the most worked materials in arts and crafts, wood carving similarly qualitifes as a very ancient and versatile medium, with a history that dates back thousands of years. Recognized for its solid and resistant qualities, wood ages naturally, is a great representation of nature within the home environment and also complements a wide range of styles.  In this feature, we wanted to share some amazingly hand-crafted art and design pieces by Japanese sculptor Hiroyuki Nishimura, who uses wood as his central material - in a sustainable way. All his works are carved from logs into characteristic shapes and most of the wood he utilizes for his works is unusable for other purposes. Instead of wasting the unusable material he finds, Nishimura uses the leftover wood as a suitable material for furniture or architectural use. The  irregularities, cracks and splits that you see in some of the pieces are deliberate and celebrated as part of the piece itself, where the artist does not necessarily seek perfection, but pays more attention to the overall form. Through his artistic effort, Nishimura conveys an eco-message by raising awareness and encouraging an ethic of cherishing and conservation. Check out these beautifully carved pieces by Nishimura, to add warmth, elegance, and liveliness into your interiors! ...
