Mayapán Collection is composed by various pieces that mix the contemporary forms with a handmade technique. Karim and Joana, founders of Ayres Estudio takes inspiration from the traditional mexican objects made in lava rock. Each piece was beautifully hand-carved from lava rock by artisans in El Seco, Puebla.

Inspired by their historical, natural and primitive roots, they highlight the beauty of the materials, designing unique objects and furniture with a primary aesthetic. The Ayres shapes are basic and unique, remembering prehistoric utensils.

They work the designs in several states in México, setting fair terms of trade with artisans and that can allow them offer objects 100% handmade with high quality materials and the most beautiful hand craft work.

Care: Being a porous and natural material without any coating, it will darken when in contact with oils. Before its first use, if it is going to be in contact with food, you should wash it with a brush, water, soap and carve raw corn with the pestle and it will be ready. The Vase includes a glass intern container.

Each piece is handmade so there could be a slight variation in size and color.

Artist Profile

Born: 2014

Hometown: Mexico City

Based in: Mexico City

We are Joana Valdez, Industrial designer from Yucatán, México and Karim Molina, Textile designer from Caracas, Venezuela.

We design utility, simple objects and furniture with a primary aesthetic. Our basic shapes are unique, remembering prehistoric utensils.

Inspired by our historical, natural and primitive roots, we highlight the beauty of the materials, design and quality. We work with natural materials like Guayacán and Tzalam woods, lava rocks, marbles and natural leathers. Our processes are completely handmade allowing each object be a unique piece, love to always explore new techniques and materials.

We work our designs in several states in México, one in Yucatán, where we produce wood designs. We seek to establish fair terms of trade with artisans and that can allow us to offer objects 100% handmade with high quality materials and the most beautiful hand craft work.

Our philosophy is that all we deserve special objects that tell a story and a purpose within our spaces, that is why we personally seek the materials and the artisans we work with, these gives a sentimental and totally intimate side to each of our designs.

We design and create simple handmade objects with the finest materials and a great story behind, proposing a simple, natural and personal life.

Ayres’s work has been exhibited in Barcelona, New York, ZⓢONAMACO in Mexico City, Museo Tamayo , MUAC and London Design Festival, among others.

"Our pieces shows the perfection of the natural materials and the imperfection of handmade process. Like human beings each piece is unique and beautifully imperfect".
