Artist statement
“Autonomous Body” is an object that explores the relation between the natural and the artificial through the vessel as a medium. During the process i interpret the material´s character and enhance features like cracks and grain in the wood and include these in the design.
The oval body evokes the association of an egg which carries potential life within a fragile shell. It seems to be a grown organic structure rather than made on purpose.
Although i have an initial idea of the final object, it is only by hand and eye that i slowly develop the waves and dunes defining the body. Thus each piece is given time to grow and mature.
On a larger scale the work is very much connected to the natural world itself by paying tribute to the formal language of archaic surroundings that shaped our consciousness throughout an incredible long period of evolutionary processes.
The title “Autonomous Body” refers both to objects that are made out of a human desire to reflect our natural environment through the use of craft as well as the fact that the same surroundings let us become autonomous bodies ourselves.
