Based in: Montreal
Based in Montreal, Quebec, Mie Kim’s work is an exploration of balance in aesthetic contradiction: emptiness and rough edges, asymmetry and functionality, expansion and rootedness. Inspired by wabi-sabi and traditional arts and crafts of her native Korea and hometown, Seoul, her practice melds a sense of ancient form and ritual with the graceful imperfection of presence and spontaneity. Each object is as influenced by her roots as it is by her current natural surroundings: she collects and integrates indigenous organic materials—tree ash, and wild clay harvested from the riverbeds of local mountain ranges—into a selection of her pieces. Her work evokes a sense of spaciousness and meditation, with each object designed to feel like a natural inhabitant of its space. Mie Kim’s work is featured in boutiques across Canada, UK, Japan, Seoul, and the United States.
