Artist Statement
studio Jig's 'free form lamination' technique was developed to challenge the notion that coniferous woods are unsuitable for furniture production. It involves layering and crimping a great quantity of thin slices of Yoshino Cedar, and free forming them without a mould. 'Free form lamination' is only possible with Yoshino Wood that possess qualities like fine and straight wood grains, even tones, durable flexibility, and near absence of any knots. The technique preserves these qualities of the highly regarded Yoshino Wood, and shares the warmth of the material with its user.
Originally designed and produced for a boutique hotel in the mountains of Nara, the Low Rocker Chair provides comfort and relaxation to users of all ages.
Each piece of furniture by studio Jig is handmade, the unique wood grains, patterns and tones differ with each piece.
