It is impossible not to be captured by the smile and spontaneity of the master artisan and sculptor Expedito Jonas de Jesus. He makes it seem easy to create beautiful sculptures in soapstone without even making a drawing first. It is as simple as that: he spends time looking at the stone until he sees what it wants to be inside and then uses his chisel to remove fragments that do not belong to it.
Voluptuous women, cherubs, flowers, lions, elephants. A gift, a passion, an art.
Making an allusion to the gold taken from Brazil by the Portuguese crown during the colonial period, the Artisans Collection wants to show that the true Brazilian gold is still here, latent, waiting to be found.
There is an immense wealth stored in every artisan of this country, we just have to get rid of stereotypes and learn to see. The pieces of the collection are inspired by five artisans from Tiradentes (MG) and their different expertise. Through them, I present my gaze on the work of each one. There are dressers, tables, mirrors, and lamps with the soul of each artisan and mine as well.
Artisans are our wealth, our roots, our culture. Carvings, sculptures, embroidery and the like emerge from their hands, from their hearts love, respect and sensitivity. An honor for me that they allow me to enter their worlds and bring them into mine. The Artisans Collection is a tribute to them, the people responsible for passing on much of our traditions.

Born and raised in Brazil, undergraduate in business administration, interior design and furniture design.
Yankatu was born out of my desire to translate the essence of Brazilian identity through art and a unique and timeless design. My work consists of immersions in communities throughout Brazil, studying aspects rooted in culture and manual labor and rescuing lost techniques, reorganizing and helping to improve the activities of these people for the development of a joint work whose focus is the valorization of Brazilian culture and crafts.
Yankatu's pieces have ALMA ("soul", in english), through the relationships established during the projects, and through a notebook that accompanies each piece, where inspirations, immersion images and part of the stories of the artisans involved and their regions are shared. Some pages are left blank, in an invitation for the story to continue being told and passed on from generation to generation.
Transmitting knowledge is an act of preserving our memory.
