Artist Statement
This Portal Vase belongs to my FroZen collection that is inspired by Armenian winter landscape. The pieces' texture and lines reference bare winter trees, bushes, rocks and earth covered with snow.
The work is produced from a combination of wheel-throwing and hand building. Electric-fired earthenware with white glaze.
A portal can be defined as a doorway, a gate, or entrance often to another world of the past, present, or future, or to an expanded awareness.

Artist Profile
Born: 1990
Hometown: Dilijan
Based in: Dilijan, Armenia
Yaro Zabavskiy attended United World College in Wales, UK and went on to study Studio Arts at Earlham College, IN, USA, where he has discovered a passion for ceramics and analogue photography.
His body of work contains ceramic vessels and sculptures with textures that reference the beautiful mountainous landscapes of Armenia. The solidity of rock formations and the ephemerality of the seasons imbue his practice. The techniques he uses encourage the development of various textures on the surface of his pieces. Yaro enjoys both throwing on the wheel and hand building and often uses combinations of several making methods.
He believes that tactile relationship with the objects that surround us is particularly important in the age of scrolling and swiping. As an artist he enjoys working with his hands and finds satisfaction in the ability to create works that people want to pick up and touch.
