Based in: The Netherlands
I was born in the Netherlands, but raised abroad in Belgium, Spain, Hungary, and the USA before returning to the Netherlands in my late teens. During my time as an expat, a common ground that I maintained in each country was to seek out creative environments, always partaking in various fine arts and photography classes. I painted abstract and surrealism for many years, and practiced various arts such as silkscreen painting, portrait drawing, and printing at Silvermine Arts Academy. I photographed and developed B&W analogs myself as well as helped curate a museum exhibition at Bush Holley in Greenwich, CT. I further pursued my creative career by studying at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute of Technology, where I learned about concept developing and branding. This is also when I met my (business) partner Jake Richmond.
I have also always had a great affinity with sustainability. It feels like a given to me that our impact on the planet must be minimal wherever possible and that we have to give back to Mother Nature as much as we take from her. When I discovered, partly via AMFI, that many luxury brands don't practise environmental ethics, I decided to embark on a quest to redefine sustainable luxury. With this in mind, Jake and I conceptualised Sooka, a creative studio and conscious luxury brand. But the story of how Sooka came about actually started long before Jake and I officially established ourselves as a company in 2017.
Jake and I had both visited Indonesia since the early 2000s (Jake) and 2012 (Eva). Over time, we came into contact with the most talented artists and artisans. We were invited into their homes where we drank coffee and listened to their stories about their forefathers, how they learned their craft, and more. And each year we came back to Indonesia, our desire to create became stronger. It was in 2017 that we decided to pursue this passion. Now, Sooka is a collective consisting of 30 of the most talented Balinese and Javanese craftsmen, which give shape to our design visions. We only work with the best artisans, which means that our pieces are created in limited pieces.
For Sooka, I conceptualized and Jake designed our 'Eternity of Remarkable Species', a collection of bronze sculptures of endangered species. These pieces serve to raise awareness of the fragility of the species. Their eternal-ness has been solidified into a 2000 Celsius bronze sculpture. We also offer stunning lampshades made from the fast-growing material of bamboo.
Join us on our journey of redefining sustainable luxury.
