Jessica Sellinger is a ceramic Artist currently located in Brisbane, Australia. Working with clay as her current medium, Jess is a one woman show creating all of her pieces by hand in her home studio. Throughout her work you will see variations in self taught hand building techniques such as throwing, coiling, pinching, slump moulding and slab building. Jess's work reflects simplicity, sustainability, slow design and natural beauty, in both the clays natural texture and the natural shape of the human body.
Her current work consists of sculptures, vases and vessels that are designed for floral arrangements or to stand beautifully on their own as sculptural objects. Her pieces aim to encapsulate the viewer and make even the simplest of spaces seem artistic.
Only starting her work seriously in early 2020, Jess enjoys watching her ceramics evolve in design and functionality, as she grows as an artist herself.
What inspires you?
Lighting, texture and natural qualities of the clay. I find beauty in creating various textures with the same materials.
Describe your creative process.
A lot of my designs come from trial and error, experimentation and utilising my mistakes to evolve my designs. I'm constantly inspired by the natural shapes of the human body and how they can be represented both realistically and abstractly.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
My fingers and hands are the biggest tool...and a sponge
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Your mistakes are your biggest lessons
Where do you go for inspiration?
A lot of inspiration comes from researching current or past design. Understanding the origins and how it came about. I feel as though many of my pieces reflect how I'm feeling at that current time
