Nozomi Fujii

Nozomi Fujii

Born: 1976

Hometown: Kuwana

Based in: Shizuoka

Nozomi Fujii was born in 1976 in Mie Prefecture, Japan. During her childhood, she was obsessed with the idea of creating things by her own as well as the systematic process of making , which eventually became the source of her creative ceramic artworks.

She graduated from Shizuoka University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Forest Resource Science in 1999. The technical methods of research she learnt in the university also constructed her current style of ceramic creation.

She studied ceramic art at Tokoname City Municipal Ceramic Art Laboratory for one year. She has participated in domestic solo & group exhibitions since 2009.
In 2020, she was invited to 1000 VASES in Paris.

What makes Nozomi focused on using pottery wheels in her works, is the absolute limitation given by its concentrical movement, which only allows her to shape clays symmetrical.
In order to bring out natural colors as well as a character of original texture from clays themselves, she does not use glaze. By doing so, the artist can extract the primitive sense of non-materialistic ancient times, and visualize them in a modern style.

More About Nozomi Fujii

IconInspires

What inspires you?

I get inspiration from many things around myself. Especially, architecture and natural science have become an important source of my ideas.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

My design work is based on the accumulation of my past experiences and emotion, and inspiration. They are assembled systematically in order to form their shapes before I begin my actual clay work.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

tranquility, sense of tension, minimalism

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

Alberto Giacometti, Constantin Brancusi, Leonard da Vinci, Hans Coper, Tadao Ando, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Naoto Fukasawa

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

pottery wheel and my hands

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

" Those who go slowly go far. " (Qui vas longtemps, qui vas loin.) I need a lot of time to make my works through the sequence of trials. The today's fast trend sometimes asks me for a quick response, and it is hard for me to catch up with. It also makes me nervous, too. I’m always relieved by this French saying that my friend had told me before.

IconLightbulb

Museum, Art Museum, Art Gallery, Somewhere outside my living area
