In 2018 the architects Thalía Velasco and Walther Santiago founded Raíz Mx, a design studio that rescues and unites the history of pottery, one of the most representative Mexican artisan techniques, with contemporary design through pieces that highlight the authenticity of clay. and they are capable of tangibly showing the materialization of our roots and their ability to contain time and its transformations in each of its lines of expression.
It all started with a trip back in time, searching and rescuing unique pieces of clay throughout Mexico, which are meticulously selected for their shape, texture and forgotten stories, giving them a second chance, perhaps not for what they were created, but to show the tradition and history they represent.
Likewise, using pottery and mud as a channel, Raíz now shows a new facet of the work that can be carried out by maximizing the capacity and quality of the material, respecting the essence of traditional artisanal processes and exploring at each stage of production, from the conception of the design, the selection and mixing of the material to the various types of final finishes that each piece can have. In the same way, it seeks to maximize the skills and abilities of each artisan without neglecting the traditional Mexican essence of their technique.
One of the reiterative axes that identifies Raíz is the way in which the transformation of clay is exalted in appearance and essence, exhibiting the possibilities that such a noble and representative material as clay possesses.
Each piece made is different and special, it has its own personality, it is the result of a long process of collaboration between the designer and the artisans who actively participate in each phase of the project. They are not just pieces of clay, they are characters who seek to tell new stories.
