Roland Smith

Hometown: Belper, Derbyshire

Based in: Belper, Derbyshire

Studied fine furniture making at the Peter Sefton Furniture School near Malvern, England. My love is for creating beautiful, and usually useful objects in wood, seeking help from others for materials such as metals or fabric.

A theme I am exploring at the moment is how to encourage my pieces to feel as if they have a life of their own, in the way that authors often describe the characters in their books.

More About Roland Smith

IconInspires

What inspires you?

It feels like it is mostly from within my mind, but in reality it comes from everything I have ever seen or experienced throughout my life.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I aim to get as far down the design process as possible purely by thinking about it. The best I have achieved so far is about 30% of the way. After that I try to do as much as I can with sketches, but usually at least 50% of the total design comes when I start making models and prototypes.

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

My imagination. Oh, and a quality pencil sharpener.

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

If you aim for quality, the speed will come. The converse never happens.
