Yankatu - Design With Soul

Yankatu - Design With Soul

Born: 2015

Hometown: São Paulo

Based in: São Paulo

Born and raised in Brazil, undergraduate in business administration, interior design and furniture design.

Yankatu was born out of my desire to translate the essence of Brazilian identity through art and a unique and timeless design. My work consists of immersions in communities throughout Brazil, studying aspects rooted in culture and manual labor and rescuing lost techniques, reorganizing and helping to improve the activities of these people for the development of a joint work whose focus is the valorization of Brazilian culture and crafts.

Yankatu's pieces have ALMA ("soul", in english), through the relationships established during the projects, and through a notebook that accompanies each piece, where inspirations, immersion images and part of the stories of the artisans involved and their regions are shared. Some pages are left blank, in an invitation for the story to continue being told and passed on from generation to generation.

Transmitting knowledge is an act of preserving our memory.

More About Yankatu - Design With Soul

IconInspires

What inspires you?

The willing of revealing stories, convey the value of artisanal work and the brazilian traditions.

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I try to get in touch with the artisans like a blank sheet to be able to absorb all stimuli and information with no preconceived thaughts that can limit my emotions. I speak whatever comes to mind, I photograph what guides my attention, it breaks down barriers and let the relationship flows. I bring back the handicrafts that represents the techniques and materials used by the artisans and I use the knowledge and images acquired during the experience to research further and start drawing. It reflects my emotions with total freedom of creativity. Then, the pieces start to be born!

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

Soul, respect and identity.

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

Brazilian artisans. These not only influence, but whose work is added to mine to give life to a Yankatu piece. They safeguard ancestral traditions and techniques that help us understand our roots. Your stories, way of life, the way they relate to the raw material, the nature around them, the community in which they live, all of this is a starting point for the research that brings soul to the work I create.

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

The artisans' hands and my hands. Besides my creativity that I allow to be free.

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

"You are breaking a new path, it will not be easy because people tend to be afraid of the unknown. Don't take shortcuts or lose focus, move on and don't stop, Brazilian handicrafts needs you."

IconLightbulb

Where do you go for inspiration?

I feel inspired when I'm emerged on communities where I can live the day-by-day of the artisans.
