Lot 39: Conservatoire Royal Bruxelles

Info

The lack of human presence in Candida Höfer's highly conceptual photographs of public an dsemi-public spaces and buildings forces the eye to focus on how design details affect the preception of space. Conservatoire Royal Bruxelles almost resembles an abstraction, highlighitng the ambiguity of scale when presented to viewers devoid of context. The image is also both a witty reference to Höfer's emjoyment of image sequences and an excellent example of her interest in how individual, repeating structures form a large, grand edifice. The artist, one of the most renowned students of Bernd and Hilla Becher, is recognised for her impeccable technique in the use of photography.
