This photo depicts the beauty of Xishi (497 BC) who was a legendary beauty of ancient China. She is celebrated as a woman of extraordinary natural beauty with a universal appeal. Xi Shi is often described in Chinese paintings as a beautiful lady kneeling by the riverside, washing gauze. It is said that fishes, dazzled by her beauty, would forget how to swim and sink into the lake, thus winning her the title of 'the beauty that makes the fish sink'.
This photo is part of the art series "XIAN - Myths of the Beauties" that the artist created in 2015 which was inspired by the Four Great Beauties of ancient China who changed the history of the four different dynasties in ancient times: Diao Chan, Yang Guifei, Wang Zhaojun, and Xishi. These Four Great Beauties were renowned for their unparalleled beauty which they used to exercise influence over kings and warriors.
