April Moffatt

April Moffatt

Born: 1976

Hometown: Leona Valley

Based in: Charleston

April grew up in a small rural town in California and was pretty much allowed to run free, exploring nature often. She always wanted to be an artist but believed the lie that “you can’t make a living from art”. When her youngest graduated from high school, she threw off that thought and pulled out her paints and has been painting ever since.
April is heavily influenced by the classical impressionists but strives to bring about elements of expressionism as well into her paintings. She uses color fearlessly and is always striving to "capture the light". April wants her paintings to invoke the emotions of her subjects and especially the wild feelings of being out of doors surrounded by the beauty of nature. Her hometown is Charleston, SC and she is constantly grateful by the beauty of the Lowcountry. She travels often with her husband and is inspired by landscapes from across the globe.

April taught all the humanities with an emphasis on Ancient History and Literature for many years before embarking on a painting career. Mostly self-taught in the world of art, her classical education does weave its way into her viewpoint however. April also uses painting to connect deeply with God and the spiritual world all around us.

More About April Moffatt

IconInspires

What inspires you?

I am obsessed with clouds, sunsets, and expansive vistas. I love being outdoors exploring nature or in my garden. Gratefulness is something I try to practice and I find that it helps me see beauty in so many places. I am also inspired every time I travel to some new place. New adventures are invigorating to me and want to put those feelings into m

IconCreative

Describe your creative process.

I usually am inspired by a place, a dream, or a picture that I have taken in my travels. I then start planning and imagining the color palette that I want to create the piece in. I like to have a general idea before I start sketching. I premix my palette and then start painting.

IconMagnifying

What are 3 words that best describe your work?

loose, confident, expressive

IconUser

Who are some artists that have influenced your work?

Van Gogh's works were the first pieces that fascinated me. I began studying the classical impressionists first and they have had a huge impression on me. I was also surrounded by more modern western landscape paintings growing up and I still love those to this day.

IconTool

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

My imagination! After that I would say my trusting palette knife.

IconGive

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

It's ok to make bad art, don't let it slow you done, just keep painting everyday.

IconLightbulb

Where do you go for inspiration?

One of my favorite places in the world is Middleton Gardens in Charleston, SC. I have a membership there and go often to spend time in nature and peace.
