15 Art Residencies in Europe For Emerging Artists

Art residencies provide the perfect environment for an artist to devote dedicated time to evolve their practice with the added benefits of studio spaces, new influences, contacts, visibility, and in some cases, even funding. Europe with its thriving art scene and support system is a major draw for artists from around the world. The region offers a wide variety of residency programs to help artists advance their craft and careers and also, strengthen international and local art communities.

The Artling has put together a list of some of the most prominent art residencies in Europe specializing in visual arts. From residencies in the middle of vibrant cities to the quiet of the outdoor wilderness, there is something for every kind of emerging artists.

Frans Masereel Centre 

Where: Kasterlee, Belgium
For: Artists, graphic designers, researchers, critics
How it works: Specializing in printmaking, Frans Masereel Centre offers 4 different residency programs spanning 1 to 6 weeks for artists selected through an application process.

WIELS Residency Programme

Where: Brussels, Belgium
For: Emerging artists from all over the world.
How it works: WIELS offers a 6-12 months residency program focusing on visual art but candidates may work with any medium. Living and travel costs are paid by the artists while the center offers workspace, equipment, presentation, and study trips and excursions.

Gasworks

Where: London, United Kingdom
For: Emerging artists who work in all disciplines.
How it works: Gasworks hosts a minimum of 16 residencies each year for non-UK-based artists for a period of up to 3 months.

Camargo Foundation

Where: Cassis, France
For: Applicants from all countries and nationalities representing 3 main categories - artists, scholars, thinkers.
How it works: The program consists of 6 to 11 weeks with 18 individuals or teams selected through an application process. A weekly stipend of USD250 is provided along with travel expenses to and from Cassis.

Triangle France

Where: Marseille, France
For: Open to international emerging artists.
How it works: The program hosts 9 artists every year for 3 to 4 months who are selected by an advisory board composed of Triangle France staff and art professionals. Residents are given a production grant of €1000 apart from studio space, technical support, and assistance in search of materials, techniques, and partnerships.

Künstlerhaus Bethanien

Where: Berlin, Germany
For: Open to international emerging artists through partners and sponsors located in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Korea, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, and Sweden.
How it works: Applicants can submit their application for the 12 months program only through associated partners of Künstlerhaus Bethanien and must fulfill the specific application guidelines of those partners.

Akademie Schloss Solitude

Where: Stuttgart, Germany
For: International artists and scientists from the following spheres of practice - VISUAL (visual arts and media), AURAL & PHYSICAL (music and performing arts), DIGITAL/Digital Solitude (digital art, gaming, digital journalism, digital publishing), SPATIAL (architecture and design), TEXTUAL (literature and language), SOCIETAL/COMMUNAL-BASED WORK (education, mediation, theory), SCIENTIFIC/art, science & business (humanities, social, natural and economic sciences).
How it works: The 6-12 months program is open once every two years. The fellowship offers a monthly fellowship grant of € 1,200, travel expenses for arrival and departure to Stuttgart, and a free fully furnished apartment/working studio (including electricity, water, and heating).

Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral 

Where: Bad Ems, Germany
For: Open to visual artists of any age from Germany and around the world. The preconditions for applicants for the residential fellowships for visual artists are a completed course of study in art (M.F.A. or comparable) and three years of continuous artistic work after the conclusion of studies.
How it works: The 3 or 9-month program is open for application between May and June every year. The fellowship offers international scholarship including an endowment of € 1,400 per month and free accommodation.

The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts

Where: Skopelos Island, Greece
For: Ceramists, mixed media artists, painters, printmakers, and sculptors.
How it works: The program runs for 2 weeks to 2 months from March through December. All applications are approved by the Board of Directors and residents are required to donate at least 1 piece of their work to the Foundation’s collection for future reference and exhibitions.

Tyrone Guthrie Centre

Where: CO. MONAGHAN, Ireland
For: Practising artists working in any genre with a proven track record.
How it works: Artist residencies are offered for 1 week to 3 months with various grants and bursaries for local and international artists.

Villa Lena Foundation

Where: Tuscany, Italy
For: International contemporary artists working in art, music, film, literature, fashion and other creative disciplines.
How it works: The residency program runs from April to October each year and applicants are selected based on their application, interview performance, and feedback from Foundation’s Advisory Board. All residents are required to donate one of their work to the Villa Lena Foundation at the end of their residency.

The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center

Where: Bellagio, Italy
For: Academics, artists, thought leaders, policymakers, and practitioner
How it works: Residents are selected for this 4 weeks program based on the applicant's background, applicant's project, and the suitability of the project for the Bellagio Center. Applicants from outside North America are especially encouraged to apply.

Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten

Where: Amsterdam, Netherlands
For: Artists from all over the world with a few years of professional experience, particularly in relation to finishing their education. Preference is given to artists between 25 - 35 years of age but others are welcome to apply.
How it works: The Rijksakademie offers residency to around fifty artists (for one year, with year extension) with the goal of providing space for research, experiment, and production. The benefits include a studio, a stipend to contribute to living expenses (in 2019: €12,800) and a working budget (in 2019: €1,500).

De Ateliers

Where: Amsterdam, Netherlands
For: De Ateliers is open to artists at the beginning of their professional career who are preferably under 28 years of age. 
How it works: The program lasts 2 years from September until August and includes a stipend (in 2018/2019: €13,550).

Jan van Eyck Academie

Where: Maastricht, Netherlands
For: Promising and established artists, designers, photographers, architects, writers, curators, and thinkers from all over the world.
How it works: The 12-month residency can start either in April or November with 32 -35 spots available each year. Residents are selected based on the assessment by a selection committee consisting of the director of the Jan van Eyck Academie, advisors and one or two external members. Participants receive a monthly stipend of €900 and a working budget of €2,000 annually.
