Austin Turley is a Portland, Oregon-based artist whose objects and images investigate themes of presence, memory, language, and time. He works in multiple formats, using the act of collecting as a point of departure. Turley received a BFA in sculpture from the Pacific Northwest College of Art. After graduating he received employment as a glass caster at Bullseye Glass Company. He has been awarded multiple residencies, including Yucca Valley Material Lab (Yucca Valley, CA), Hafnarborg, (Hafnarfjörður, IS), Hangar (Lisbon, PT), Pilotenkueche (Leipzig, DE), Hinge Arts (Fergus Falls, MN), Arquetopia (Puebla, MX), and Glean (Portland, OR). Grants have been awarded from Regional Arts and Cultural Council, Oregon Arts Commission, Springboard for the Arts, and Working Artist Org. He has exhibited nationally, including two solo shows at Gray Contemporary (Houston, TX), as well as internationally. Turley is represented by Alfa Gallery (Miami, FL).
For a majority of the wall mounted kiln formed glass sculptures, I utilize water quenched frit. This is made by ladling molten glass into running water. The result is a fragmented and inconsistent texture, similar to crushed ice.

Where do you go for inspiration?
I seem to always find inspiration while in motion, whether it's riding my bicycle, commuting on public transportation, traveling to a new country, or simply walking. Each of these actions provides a certain potential for impact, input, and processing.
