Ay Tjoe Christine

Born: 1973

Hometown: Bandung

Based in: Bandung

Christine Ay Tjoe is Indonesia's most prominent female contemporary artists. Starting out as a graphic artist, she experimented with dry-point technique, and this taught her a lot about the sharpness of the needle and about lines. In her later works on paper and canvas, lines, whether straight, curvy or broken, remained paramount and allowed her to structure her works. Her work is delicate to the point of fragility and reveals the two distinct worlds or territories of the artist. First, there is an internal world full of inner thoughts, melancholy, struggle, pain and happiness that seems to reflect her personality and her personal life. It is the world of forms, pace and colours can be mixed with figures and create sensorial experiences that can be varied indefinitely because they are part of human life.
