More About Brian Wiggins

Question IconWhat inspires you?

Many things can inspire me, from specific locations, personal experiences, to how space and color is perceived. Sometimes I will see a particular effect of light, make quick notes, photographs or drawings and bring that back to the studio where I will dissect it.

Question IconDescribe your creative process.

My creative process is currently two-dimensional painting on paper and canvas. For some of the work I reproduce small drawings and create repeated patterns that I then paint by scraping the paint across the surface with custom cut squeegees. By doing this I can achieve a flatter color area void of brush textures and maintain a crisp hard edge. When I use a brush I thin the paint down and apply many coats of paint to also remove any sign of the brush. I prefer to have color interact with as little interference as possible.

Question IconWhat are 3 words that best describe your work?

Color, space and perception.

Question IconWho are some artists that have influenced your work?

The first artist that comes to mind is Claude Monet because of how his paintings are defined as surfaces that reflect light and the transparencies.

Question IconWhat is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Paint, don't think. I didn't listen very well.

Question IconWhere do you go for inspiration?

I listen to a lot of music. I find it a great distraction but also a way to reaffirm how I feel.
