Carrie Jean Goldsmith
Hometown: Hamilton
Based in: United Kingdom
Carrie Jean Goldsmith uses various media to create both abstract and loosely representational artwork with colour, gesture and tonal gradation key elements to her work.
Goldsmith endeavours to create imagery that is both compelling and ambiguous, always with a glimmer of light. She is influenced by her surroundings and her own physical and contemplative state. Goldsmith’s work attempts to capture the essence of her subject, seeking the balance between expressionism and informed thought.

More About Carrie Jean Goldsmith
What inspires you?
I'm inspired by anything and everything, whether it's music, the landscape, how I'm feeling on a particular day or just life.
Describe your creative process.
I begin with a combination of warm colours, applied almost blindly, and then start my composition on top. Some of the initial colour may or may not show in the final piece.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Instinctive Gestural Intuitive
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
My early influences include Emily Carr and many artists painting around that time; Mark Gertler, Dora Carrington, Edward Burra, Juan Gris and then, somewhat later, Richard Diebnkorn, Francis Bacon and, of course, abstract expressionists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell and the lesser known Bernice Bing (plus so many others!). As far as more contemporary artists go I love the beautiful geometric paintings of Tomma Abts and am also a fan of Sean Scully and Peter Doig to name but a few.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
My decorator's brushes
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
It was more a passage I read in the diaries of West Sussex artist Ivon Hitchens. He wrote about balance of mark-making, line and form and why it may or may not be working. This has stuck with me and helped me with my own work for years.
Where do you go for inspiration?
