I grew up in a home in Shelbyville, Kentucky where art and culture were always present. My mother, Jean Logan, was a Cartographer for the army in WWII and would later become an in-demand portrait painter. She continued drawing and painting until she passed away at 92. Painting and drawing classes, crafts and art books of every sort were an integral part of my growing up.
I can well remember creating my own “studio” in the basement as a kid and creating posters, portraits and art of all kinds while being inspired by the movie Xanadu which was on a new cable service called HBO. My need for creative expression continued to grow as I took every kind of art class available at my high school.
I majored in Fine Arts at Transylvania University, studying under Jack Girard who is still a Professor of Art there. His focus on collage as a primary medium was a strong influence on me and I quickly started experimenting with 2d and 3d creations of my own, in addition to the foundational work the program required.
After graduation I attended the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida as a Computer Graphics major. In addition to studying and completing the general course work, it was here that I first began my particular style of 3D assemblage sculpture – quite out of necessity in fact after a day at the beach.
What inspires you?
Music, modern art, modern architecture, vibrant sunsets, the beach
Describe your creative process.
I use a bandsaw to cut large pieces of wood into different shapes, curved and straight. There is no sketch done beforehand. No guide or even a loose rendering of what I intend to create – it's all random. Then I assemble the shapes into a composition that just feels right. I assemble the pieces from the back, mark them then take it all apart. Next I sand, prime and paint. After the pieces are done I reassemble them. As a finish I add small shapes and splashes of color.
