My name is Elena Raceala and I live in Constanta, a city located in Romania, on the Black Sea shore and I consider myself a world citizen. I work as a nurse at the County Clinical Emergency Hospital of Constanta.
I describe my work as Fine Art with surreal, grunge, or poetry valency.
Photography is emotion. I can't say exactly how and when the click happened, but on one of my trips to Italy in 2013, on a rainy morning, I took the first photo I'm very attached to. From that moment on, part of me lives through photography. The transition from travel and street photography to Fine Art was made out of the desire to express my vision, my message. I want to convey through my images the emotion of discovering the perspective of a moment, of a story without words. Life inspires me, people with joys or difficult moments, sometimes my compositions resemble the human condition in which light and darkness live together. I like to look for new places that will surprise me, but I like the human presence, the usual moments, from everyday life, moments that I then expose in a black and white vision. Every moment is unique, I stop at what my heart tells me that I can portray them in a visual story. What I want is for the emotion I felt when I took the photo to reach the one who sees it. The story does not stop here, I want to touch the conceptual side as well as other photographic projects in the future.
What inspires you?
Life inspires me, people with joys or difficult moments, sometimes my compositions resemble the human condition in which light and darkness live together. I like to look for new places that will surprise me, but I like the human presence, the usual moments, from everyday life, moments that I then expose in a black and white vision.
Describe your creative process.
My workflow in editing photos starts with the selection and then everything is about inspiration. Usually, I have several alternatives of the same compositions and then I choose one of them.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Surreal Fine Art
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
I started with street photography and these are just a few of the photographers I have now in my mind Fan Ho, Henri Cartier Bresson, Elliot Erwitt, Garry Winogrand, Vivien Maier.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
Inspiration. Everything is feeling!
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
To be persevering was by far the strongest advice I had ever received.
Where do you go for inspiration?
I like to travel and especially to take photos during this time. The challenges come from approaching the unknown. The perfect moment can appear anytime, no matter if there is rain, snow, shadow, or light. Then along the time I choose a photo in a folder to look at and at that moment, I know what the next story I want to share will be.
